Drilling fluids are used to facilitate the drilling process by suspending cuttings, controlling pressure, cooling, and lubricating, to name a few. There are different types of drilling fluids, also called drilling mud. They could be water-based, oil-based, or synthetic-based, and each composition provides different solutions in the well.  Many factors are taken into consideration by the drilling fluid engineer when choosing the composition of the drilling fluid to be used; like the rock formation, well’s design, cost, and the environment. Environmental regulations play an important role in the decision-making process.

Environmental concerns started in the mid 80’s and waste disposal, levels of contamination, spills, and any other potential risk to the environment began to be under scrutiny. Nowadays companies in the energy sector must comply with a wide range of safety and environmental regulations.

Katch Kan‘s Zero Spill System provides spill containment for drilling rigs, collecting and redirecting drilling fluids to be reused or recycled.  The Zero Spill System is designed for land rigs, off-shore rigs, and workover rigs.

Zero Spill System

The Zero Spill System reduces the volume of drilling fluids released into the surrounding environment, decreasing the likelihood of adverse environmental impacts caused by the release of these fluids.  The Zero Spill System collects 99.9% of the drilling fluids, its performance has been proven by the Environmental Technology Verification Program.

The spill containment system, Zero Spill Systems, can be installed in 2 to 3 hours and the rig can continue with its regular operations with no downtime for the rig.

The Zero Spill System provides spill containment, drilling fluid recuperation, environmental protection, savings on reclamation and remediation costs, and long-term liability reduction, and enables drilling fluid savings.
